Joy News’ Emmanuel Kwasi Debrah has received recognition at the 2023 Special Recognition Awards of the Ghana Science Association (GSA) for his exceptional contribution to science reporting. The award ceremony took place during the 12th GSA Research Seminar and Poster Presentations in Kumasi, where Debrah was presented with a plaque for his dedication to the field.
As the lead reporter on Joy News’ Tech Thursday, Debrah has been instrumental in covering research activities of GSA members, a feat that was commended by the president of the Ghana Science Association, Kumasi branch, Prof. Jacob Agbenorhevi.
The event also saw the Multimedia Group Limited being recognized for providing the platform for GSA activities. The conference, which was held both in-person and online, was organized in collaboration with the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS), KNUST College of Science and Young Researchers Forum of the Office of Grants and Research (OGR) KNUST.

The conference, which was part of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD-2023), had the theme, “The role of basic sciences for sustainable development.” The president of the Ghana Science Association, Kumasi branch, stressed the critical role that basic sciences play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through scientific research, technology, innovations, and partnerships.
In attendance were some students from selected Senior High Schools in Ashanti region, and over 100 poster presentations. Dr. Mrs. Augustina Angelina Sylverken of Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Ghana, WiSTEMGh, urged scientists to leave a legacy that would impact generations to come. Past president of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS), Prof. Aba Bentil Andam, also expressed her pleasure in leading the celebration of IYBSSD, 2022/2023.
