The former Minneapolis Police officer who knelt on George Floyd’s neck, Chauvin Derek, for more than 9 minutes last year has been found guilty on Tuesday of all three charges leveled against him.
Derek Chauvin, 45, has been convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
It took more than 10 hours over two days for the jury to finalize with this decision.
Chauvin made no reactions after his guilty verdict from the judge. His bail proposed by his defense counsel was revoked and he was placed in handcuffs and escorted from the courthouse.
Chauvin was charged with a second-degree-murder for assaulting Floyd with his knee, which unintentionally caused Floyd’s death.
The third-degree murder charge said Chauvin acted with a “depraved mind,” and the manslaughter charge said his “culpable negligence” caused Floyd’s death.
Derek Chauvin could possibly face up to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, up to 25 years for third-degree murder and up to 10 years for manslaughter.
Floyd’s killing took place 11 months ago after a brave bystander caught Chauvin on video showing no compassion and kneeling on the neck and back of Floyd, handcuffed and lying lifeless on the street, for an estimated time of 9 minutes and 29 seconds on May 25, 2020.
