Mental Health refers to cognitive, behavioral, and emotional well being. It is the sum total of how individuals feel, behave, and  think. The term mental health is frequently used by many individuals to indicate the state of having sound mind or absence of mental disorders. Mental health has a great effect on almost all the life processes of individuals from relationship to the individuals daily activities.

Conditions such as stress, depression, and anxiety can have great effect on the mental health of individuals. This go a long to disrupt the the individuals daily activities (routines).

No matter the age or sex of an individual, he or she is likely to suffer mental disorders at certain point in their life. It is very vital to know that good mental condition depends on feeding on good balanced diet, delicate balance of factors and that several elements of life and the world at large.

Having limited financial means or belonging to a marginalized or persecuted ethnic group can increase the risk mental health disorders.

A 2015 study of 903 families in Iran identified several socioeconomic causes of mental health conditions, including poverty and living on the outskirts of large city. The researchers also explained the difference in the availability and quality of health treatment for certain group in terms of modifiable factors, which can change over time, and nonmodifiable factors which are permanent.

Modifiable factors for mental health disorders include
  1. socioeconomic conditions, such whether work is available in the local area.
  2. occupation
  3. a person’s level of socio involvement
  4. education
  5. housing quality
Nonmodifiable factors include
  1. gender/sex
  2. age
  3. ethnicity

The study list gender/sex as both a modifiable and nonmodifiable factor. The researchers found that being a female increased the risk of low mental health status by 3.96 times.

People with a “weak economic status” also scored highest for mental health conditions in this study.

  • Biological Factors

According to the NIMH, it suggests that the genetic history of a family can lead to the increment of the risk of mental health conditions, as certain genes and gene variants puts a person at the apex risk.

However, many other factors can contribute to the development of these disorders. Having a gene with links to a mental health disorder, such as depression or anxiety does not guarantee that a condition will develop. Likewise, people without related genes or family history of mental disorders can still have mental health issues,

Mental health condition  such as stress, anxiety and depression develop due to underlying, life changing physical health problems like cancer, diabetes, and chronic pain.

The individual suffering from the mental health needs to work hand in hand with the psychologist to help him or her devise a suitable way to treat or improve the mental health of the individual under treatment.
